Few things I’d like to change in Bangalore if I ever decide to stand for elections and become Chief Minister

I have been in Bangalore for 21 years, and since some bad things haven’t changed from the very first year, I think I should make a note of them and make a change if ever possible!

Everybody knows that Bangalore has been voted the best city to live in, in India.
This is sort of a late reaction to that, but I’m sure the people who voted are people who don’t generally travel on their own, but depend on either cabs, or buses or autos. Even so, it is absolute hell to travel by road at any time of the day.

As always, twice or thrice every month mom convinces appa and me to go for some stranger’s father’s cousin’s sister’s wedding. Appa and I have no option but to agree, lest we want to be subjected to emotional blackmail later. That’s the problem if you have been in the same city all your life and all your relatives and friends live in the same city! Anyway, Saturday evening, you’d expect traffic to be rather less, considering IT companies and other offices don’t function on weekends. We left home by 6pm and reached South End Circle(about 9km away) at 8pm. Two hours. This was after being stuck in five jams, facing about 200 thousand traffic signals and also, some biker ramming into our car carelessly and then saying “sorry saar” with a sheepish grin and ripping off.

It is so frustrating with buses and trucks driving haphazardly, SUVs zigzagging their way on a road full of furious drivers. It is so scary every time I take my tiny Scooty out to ride along-side those giants and trolls; I literally pray that I reach my destination alive and in one piece. Nobody gives attention to lane discipline or has any sort of morale whatsoever! When I tell some people to follow traffic rules, I hear them say “This is India! Why follow rules when you can fuck around as much as you want and nothing’s going to stop you?” The sad part is that it is actually true. Skip a signal. Nobody will stop you. Go pee on the pavement and see who’s going to stop you. Nobody.

So you’d think it’s easier to travel on a two wheeler much faster because you can squeeze your way through. That is partly true, but two wheelers have a few problems of their own. For example, try going under a railway bridge with a train on it, anywhere in Bangalore. You’ll probably see water trickling down your helmet, or perhaps a few drops of water fall on your hand. Or, in case you’re having a terribly unlucky day, you might just get the big job done on you! I’m telling you this from first-hand experience! I hate to admit it, but I got peed on while going under a railway bridge! Real human pee. I don’t know how dog or cat pee would make it better, but it’s true and it’s the worst thing that can happen to you! And still the entire Lok Sabha goes absolutely bonkers when one sensible guy wants to improve the railway system and increases the fare by 2 paise per kilometer! I don’t see how that makes sense. Anyway, if I talk about that I’ll be deviating from the topic, so we’ll handle it later.

So I always see these trains conspiring against me and making sure they’re on the bridge every single time I have to pass. I have no choice but to wait with other two wheelers for the train to pass. It’s the worst when the train decides to stop on the bridge. I can imagine the train doing an evil laugh and saying “Try and escape now bitch!” It’s pathetic.

Another problem Bangalore traffic faces is the terror of these good for nothing cops. It’s common knowledge that they’re absolutely useless. They don’t care if there is the worst jam ever, but they take enough trouble to go through the traffic jam maze, find a guy without a helmet and empty his wallet. I don’t see a need for anyone to wear a helmet when they can’t go beyond 15kmph! It’s just absolutely ridiculous! It’s outrageous what these cops do. I once had a cop enter the auto I was going in and hitch a free ride! I was shocked but what could I have said to him? “Get out this is my auto?” “Pay for the ride?”

It’s just sad how this city functions sometimes. Someone NEEDS to change it. There are a countless other problems I can talk about, but I’ll stop with a few now. I just hope Bangalore gets a good Corporator, who will fix the roads, make sensible changes in traffic rules and also I hope Namma Metro is fully functional soon enough to reduce congestion on the roads and save us the trouble of traveling by road and wasting time! On that note, I end this post.

I thought I was the biggest Bollywood freak

Turns out there are bigger Bollywood freaks out there! :P I just returned from Rahman's concert which happened at Palace Grounds. I walked in and was handed 3D goggles. I didn't expect a 3D screen n all. In the beginning I was pretty skeptic about it but once I got used to them it was really cool! It was like Rahman was 10 feet away from me! :P (I was standing very close to the screen :P) Who cares about Rahman!! There was this REALLY cute saxophone guy sitting right behind Rahman through out the show! That's the only reason I liked the 3D effect! :P :P

Anyway, the night kicked off with an instrumental medley of Chinna Chinna Aasai, Anjali and some other songs, and then Tere Bina and Dil Se. Quite a solid start, it had me all jumpy and happy! :) After that all songs were pretty boring. :P That's why I said I thought I was a Bollywood person! I knew only, say, 60% of the songs he played! I mean, it's me!! The antakshari champion!! How can I not know Bollywood music!? :-o

Well, I guess it's mostly because I think the quality of Hindi music has gone down and everything sounds the same now. Or maybe I'm just growing too old. Gonna be 21.. Sighh..

Anyway back to Rahman, he made the crowd come to life only when he played Chuku Buku Chuku Buku Railey and Patti Rap or something.. Unfortunately I don't know either of the songs! :P For most of the people that was the highlight of the evening! The crowd went nuts! And after that I think it was Mukkala Muquabla Ohhhh Laila.. :P For me of course, the highlight was Roobaroo because I'm probably the BIGGEST fan of Rang De Basanti! That, and Lukka Chuppi from the same movie. I hate to admit it, but I secretly got tears in my eyes when he sang,

"Yahaan sab kuch hai maa phir bhi
Lagey bin tere mujhko akela
"

because my mom wanted to come for the show, but hurt her leg in the morning and couldn't. :(
Anyway enough of this emotional bullshit. :P

After those two songs I really loved the saxophone solo :P and also the violinist, Ann Mary. She was really good!

And how could I forget! I HAVE to talk about Remo, he was the most energetic guy on stage! Man! so full of enthu! Especially when he sang Mukkala.. At first when I saw him with a guitar I thought "What a wannabe". Then he picked up the flute and played some good stuff. And then I got to know he was the artist of the Flute Song! That's bloody brilliant! So I got off full respect for him!! You see, I've been addicted to flute playing for two days now. :P Hence the respect!

And then Sivamani, as always he was simply too cool with his weird ideas of percussion! :P

The man of the evening, Oscar winning Rahman! Kudos to him for having made such awesome music! He played so many instruments! And he sang really well! Some songs I thought he wasn't really singing (like Anjaana anjaani from Yuva), but I'm not sure. He either sings too effortlessly or he wasn't singing at all. Hehe.. But the best thing about Rahman is that no matter how famous he is, it doesn't get to him! He's so modest and cute.. He's so NOT a snob! He's a very sweet natured guy!

The main drawback of the evening was the set list. They played such random songs. There were many boring phases when nobody in the crowd knew the songs! I mean they played songs like Thok De Killi from Raavan and some three songs from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.. Who cares about those songs! Rahman is famous for songs from Roja and Chaiyya Chaiyya and stuff! They should have played more popular songs. Those random songs are OK for Bombay or something, not Bangalore. And the sound was bad. :-/

Anyway it was entertaining enough. :)

The background visuals were brilliant! Can't believe they pulled off something that cool at Palace Grounds. Really neat graphics and stuff! I hadn't seen anything like it before! The graphics were very effective when they gave a palace-ish look to the entire stage during Khwaja Mere Khwaja. Very good stuff!

Ok before this post gets too long, I'm going to end it. :P Thanks to Rahman and his guys for a fun filled night and for taking me back to my antakshari days with Hamma Hamma and Dil Se n all! :)

Oh that reminds me! Every single time anyone got "ha" while playing antakshari, this would be the scene -

Person 1: "Yamma yammmaaa yamma yamma.. Yeh khoobsurat samaa.. Bas aaj ki raat hain zindagi, kal hum kaha tum kaha."
Person 2: So what's my next letter?
Person 1: "Ha"
Person 2: Ok "Hamma Hamma Hamma-hamma-hamma"
Person 1 (Secretly doesn't like Person 2, so says) : Ohohoho!! That's not the starting!! "Ek hogaye hum or tum" is the starting. Go jump! Shut up and sing some other song okay?!
Person 2: ? Hmpf.. Ok.. Fml.. :-/
:P

Cheers!

"Dabba" movie!

I just returned from Inox after watching Stanley Ka Dabba, evening show. Most of you might not have heard of this Bollywood movie by Amole Gupta. I hadn't heard of it either. Over the phone my sister said "We're going for Stanley ka Dabba". I said "Family ka what?". She said "No!! STANLEY ka DABBA! It's supposed to be like Taare Zameen Par!" She went on to explain how everybody wrote very good reviews of the movie, how Rajeev Masand said the movie is a brilliant work of art, blah blah blah. I said ok and agreed to go because she promised food at Taco Bell! :D

So the movie began with comical stick figures of Stanley and a fat guy with a big moustache fighting over a ball. Then the movie actually began, where the "cute" little boy, enters school. He doesn't take a dabba to school, he eats from other's tiffin boxes, so he gets busted by this fat oaf of a teacher who eats from everyone's dabba. Trust me, he is the most disgusting man you'll ever see on screen! His mouth is perpetually watering (literally) and he keeps wiping it off with a dirty hankie and burping loudly after eating! Yuck! So we saw again and again, shots of tiffin boxes being opened, eaten closed and just like that it was half time!

Only the last ten minutes of the movie make sense and add some sort of story to the two hour-long torturous piece of crap! Seriously! I have never seen such a pointless movie. We laughed ludicrously through out the movie! It just made no sense! There's a song every few minutes that goes "dabbe dabbe noodles ke dabbe, paneer, mushroom, bleeaarrgghh". :-/

Nobody can even act in the movie. It's so made-up! Even my sister, who cried while watching Terminator-2 (!) didn't cry! That should explain, there is a major lack of any sort of "feel" in the movie.

Kids can't watch it, they won't understand anything. Young people can't watch it without cribbing about not having gotten high before the movie, old people might fall asleep. Bullshit I tell you. :-/

Yesterday two hours in the temple and today two hours of this nonsense! So not cool to celebrate like this after I passed exams! I should have watched Tamil movie "Ko" or Golden Star Ganesh's "Cool". Dammit I always make the wrong decisions in life! Sigh!

Well, at least I got my Cheese Quesadilla and Unlimited Coke! So I'm still happyy! :)

Cheers! :)

Water and Wine

I wish I can start this post with a brilliant intro like that in Wonderful Life by Alter Bridge! Such beautiful peaceful music.
Anyway, I had a very happy day today! It began with a dream about meeting Mark Tremonti, who had come to perform at my sister's Sangeet. :D Yes, my dreams are a bit erratic and crazy! It was a fun dream though. I got a picture with Mark and got him to sign in my notebook and that.
My dream also helped me decide what to gift Su for her wedding.
I was woken up by a call from my favourite person, to whom I spoke for an hour. :)
After some more lazing around I decided to get off my bed and brush my teeth. :P I had lunch because it was nearing lunch time. How I love being so lazy and chilled out during holidays with nothing to do!! :D

After that, the fun began. Uttara, Pranju, Prerna, Bonnie and I went to eat gola when it was bloody hot. After getting all the sticky kala khatta juice all over ourselves, we went to the back part of my house to wash up. What started as a wash up session turned into a crazy water fight which took us up to the roof of Uttara's house. :D
After wasting a tank full of water and a whole lot of fun we went to McDonald's in the evening.
I know McD's is so for 13 year old's but I don't really care! It's the place we have most fun at! We bossed over the billing counter guy, made him give us a free coke, threatened other tables with killer stares simply because they looked at us, sang Happy Birthday to Bonnie although we have no idea when her birthday is and basically wreaked havoc on Sampige Road! I feel like I lead this crazy all-girl rowdy cult! :P Mostly because I'm the oldest in the gang. Hehe.

We belted food like mad cows at McD's. Each of us ate two burgers, Adit of course chose to be different ate three burgers and three fries and two cokes and then golgappa outside! Hope his tummy is alright now. :o
I rode on Adit's pulsar turning backwards and sitting. So much fun! Hehe. The last time I did that was in 4th grade after Karate class in school! :P
We all walked back home, five of us, arm in arm like a bunch of tree-huggers who just won't let go! Through the last bit, we raced back home and I'll show off and say I reached first! :P
After that I sat with my folks for quite some time, ate really cute purple ice cream and that, I thought marked the end of my eventful day! But no, to top it off, when I was in the middle of typing this post, Uttara texted me, at around 1:00am, calling me to the balcony to share a glass of wine. I would never say no to my best friend although I was just then making a speech of how I'm never going to drink again. :P We spoke for three hours sitting outside sipping wine, whispering about our secret lives to each other. I'm so glad I spent that time with her, it only made me realise a lot of things about myself and made my day more perfect! :)
Ah what a wonderful life! :)
Cheers!

Ruminations of an absentminded teen

Ah! Another lazy, rainy monday afternoon... and a cup of coffee sitting by the window. So blah! I wish I could listen to music. But I'm just too lazy to go get my ipod.
But somehow I kinda like these lazy days, when I can just watch Gossip Girl or a movie I've been wanting to watch, perhaps Silence of the Lambs or something, or maybe some less gross cuz I'm too lazy to even respond emotively. Maybe Dude Where's my Car! OR I could get my guitar out and play the same old songs I play all the time- With Arms Wide Open, One Last Breath, Nothing Else Matters, etc etc. Or I could watch football on tv. Or I could read a book. Or I could go take a walk. But I forget, it's raining!

Even with so many options though, at the end of the day, I'm sure all I would've done is go on Facebook, see random pictures of strangers whose lives don't matter to me at all, or see profiles of people I dislike, or see my own albums again and again. Such a ruthless waste of time. Stupid addictive social networking sites!

I'm sitting in the same chair that I sat on when I posted my first ever post on this blog! I do hope this post marks the end of my er.. writer's block. :P

I really can't make up my mind about what I wanna do in life. I don't know why I mentioned that cuz it is my most hated topic for discussion!

Anyway, I guess I'm typing this post simply cuz I felt like typing. Or maybe it was the rare cup of coffee that my grandpa made that inspired me! An absolutely pointless post evidently.. Later!

PS: That's probably the last time I can call myself a teen on this blog or anywhere! Aaaaargh gotta go bury my face in a pillow!

2012

The makers of 2012 have timed the release of the movie perfectly; when everyone is so very curious about what’s in store for them in the unfortunately near future. Roland Emmerich brings unto you what the end of the world would look like, in a realistic, thrilling atmosphere.
2012 is a movie based on what scientists think will happen to, not a city, not a country, but to the whole world on 21st December, 2012. It revolves around a middle aged man Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) and his family, who miraculously dodge disaster after disaster, when everything behind them is quite literally falling to pieces. While a global calamity brings the world to an end, the survivors heroically struggle to keep the human race from extinction.
John Cusack has acted fairly well and so has Amanda Peet, who plays Jackson’s ex wife. The two kids in the movie, Morgan Lily and Liam James have also expressed themselves well. I liked the creepy guy, Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson), for his simplicity and great acting. What I disliked about the movie is how everyone is so melodramatic. It was a little over-the-top, making it unreal. Be it the President or the Science Advisor of the President, nobody is going to make an emotional speech when a colossal tsunami is going to hit your ship within the blink of an eye.
The most astounding part in 2012 is that one explosion or earth quake has more buildings and trees and cars collapsing than in a million Hollywood movies put together. The graphics are amazing! Visual and sound effects are the best part of the movie. You feel like you’re flying along with Jackson Curtis, ducking every time a tree or a giraffe (heh) comes your way. If you watch the movie in a 3D theatre you’re sure to go insane.
It is alarming to think of all catastrophic implications the end of the world might have. It is downright frightening to visualize all the things that will be destroyed. Sure, if you use “Earth” as a general term it doesn’t sound so bad. The way the destruction of each little important part of each country is shown is overwhelming. Like the Wonders of the world, Mount Everest, St.Peter’s Church in the Vatican City, the White House, Yellowstone National Park, Caesar’s Palace at Vegas, I mean all that effort gone into building these enormous structures and the respect the buildings have somehow earned going down in flames raises goose bumps.
So 2012 isn’t a movie that’s gonna slap you in your face and say “You are doomed” with a booming voice, neither is it a movie that will just go over your head. It might make you put your thinking cap on and go “why”. Funnily, my friend and I were really happy after the movie, simply because we were alive and nothing else I suppose. All in all a great thriller; a good watch; will keep you at the edge of your seat till the end! Three on five.

Wake up Sid!!

Main apne saamaan ke saath ek choti si khwaab layi, writer banne ki. :)
I’m so glad I watched the first day, first show of Wake up Sid. What with the ridiculous speculation going on about Sid having referred to “Mumbai” as “Bombay”, the movie might even be banned for a while. Go take a hike Raj Thackeray. Coming to the movie, the director Ayan Mukerji has done incredibly well for a debut in directing under the guidance of Karan Johar. The atmosphere of the movie is a lot like that in Dostana, bar the perverted acts.
Wake up Sid is about a young about-to-graduate lad, who goes astray with his friends after joining college. Sid, (A fan of Arsenal!) son of a well-heeled business man, is an immature boy stuck with a Peter Pan syndrome. This spoilt rich brat befriends Aisha, who has come to Bombay (In your face Raj Thackeray! :P) from Calcutta to become a writer. She is mostly craving for freedom and to be able to stand on her own feet and that. Quite obviously, Sid and Aisha become best of friends. The story is a platitude of any other Romantic Comedy in Bollywood, but very realistic and a lot people will definitely be able to connect to it.
Ranbir Kapoor has acted well. I suppose he didn’t have much acting to do because he was just being himself. He looks slightly tipsy all the time. He does NOT look gay in the movie. His t-shirts are to die for! Need I say about Konkona Sen Sharma’s acting? She is expressive as always and looks better than in her other movies. They make their friendship look very natural.
Everyone in the movie has done a good job. The Mumbai Beat office in the movie looks exceptionally innovative; very alluring. The background scores are not very appealing. It almost goes unnoticed. The movie sort of gives a new hope to people out there who think they are good at nothing. It also makes you forget about the devastation caused by rain and look at the monsoons positively for a while. The story is damn predictable but has a nice feel to it. A simple and sweet movie and for a change, a good movie which is safe enough to watch with your whole family. Hehe. Three on five.
